about me

Hey there, I'm Anthony Goodwin , a Counseling Therapist and part of the Riverbend Psychology & Wellness Group .

For more than twenty years, I've worked across community, correctional, disability, and social service settings — always with a focus on real, human connection and clinically sound care .

My approach is grounded, relational, and integrative: blending evidence-based practice with a deep respect for each person's story and lived experience.

My path to this work has been anything but linear. I've been a business owner, cocktail bartender, massage therapist, actor, and improviser — and every one of those roles has shaped how I listen, respond, and connect. Over time, I've come to see therapy not as fixing what's wrong, but as supporting the natural capacity people have to heal, adapt, and grow when they feel seen and understood.

I work with individuals and couples navigating complex mental health challenges, trauma and stress-related disorders, ADHD, anxiety, depression, grievance and loss, addictions, and major life transitions.

My practice is guided by cultural humility and intersectionality, with ongoing experience supporting Indigenous and LGBTQ2S+ clients. I try to offer a space that's steady, collaborative, and responsive — where people can take their time, explore what matters, and move toward something that feels more balanced and workable in their lives.

What I do...

My style of therapy is relational  — because no matter how much theory or experience I bring, what truly matters is how we connect and work together in the room.

I draw from Humanistic and Narrative therapies, REBT , DBT , person-centered , and strengths-based approaches, along with trauma-focused modalities such as trauma-sensitive yoga , mindfulness , and creative exploration .

I work with individuals and couples , meeting each person where they are. My role is to help create the right conditions for stability and insight — the kind that allow your natural capacity for growth and change to do what it already knows how to do. Healing often begins when things feel a bit more steady, when the noise quiets just enough to hear yourself again.

I'm interpersonal and clinically skilled, but also curious and grounded with a good sense of humor. Each session is shaped by what feels relevant and workable for you, blending evidence-based methods with a willingness to stay responsive in the moment.

If you work in corrections, healthcare, the military, or community services , you're probably familiar with trauma, burnout, and the pressure to keep moving no matter what. Having spent years inside these systems, I understand the culture and its costs. My work with frontline professionals focuses on decompressing safely, rebuilding boundaries, and reconnecting to meaning — the parts of you that exist beyond the role.

If you’re planning to use insurance, please let me know who your provider is when you get in touch. While most major plans recognize Counselling Therapy, not all do — and coverage can vary between plans under the same provider. It’s important to confirm with your insurer whether your plan includes counselling therapy before we begin.

I collaborate with organizations, community groups, and creative spaces to design and facilitate custom workshops that meet real-world needs — from staff wellness to creative development and trauma-informed group therapy.

One of my most popular offerings is Improv-Based Therapy, a powerful integration of play, embodiment, and therapeutic process. Using improv games, mindfulness, and group storytelling, participants learn to connect, communicate, and regulate emotions in a way that’s both engaging and deeply restorative.

These workshops are suitable for teams, artists, and helping professionals looking to reconnect with presence, play, and authentic expression.

I also partner with Grindstone Theatre to offer dedicated spaces for workshops and group programs, making it easy to host events in a safe, creative, and fully equipped environment.

Whether you’re an organization, arts collective, or community program, I can tailor a session or series that supports your group’s goals and culture.

As a Counselling Therapist, I don’t provide formal psychological assessments or diagnoses. However, I keep a strong working knowledge of the DSM-5 and evidence-based treatment guidelines, and can help you make sense of the language and processes involved. My role is often to translate the clinical into the understandable — helping you find clarity, next steps, and the right supports. I also can collaborate with other clinicians and healthcare providers to ensure referrals, continuity of care, and well-coordinated treatment.

crisis resources

I can work with you to establish between-session support plans for ongoing or chronic mental health concerns. These are developed collaboratively and on a case-by-case basis , and are always limited by my availability. My role is to be part of your broader support network , not a primary contact in moments of crisis.
