about me

Hey, I’m Anthony Goodwin, a counselling therapist with Riverbend Psychology & Wellness.

For over 20 years, I’ve worked across community, corrections, disability, and social services, with a consistent focus on grounded, relational care.

My approach is integrative and evidence-based, shaped by a deep respect for each person’s lived experience. I don’t see therapy as fixing what’s broken, but as supporting your capacity to adapt, heal, and grow.

Before this work, I was a business owner, bartender, massage therapist, actor, and improviser. Those experiences still shape how I listen and respond—practically, creatively, and in real time.

I work with individuals and couples navigating trauma, ADHD, anxiety, depression, grief, addiction, and major life transitions. With couples, I focus on communication, patterns of conflict, and helping partners understand what’s happening beneath the surface so they can respond differently to each other.

My practice is guided by cultural humility and intersectional awareness, with experience supporting Indigenous and LGBTQ2S+ clients. I aim to offer a steady, collaborative space where you can explore what matters and move toward something more workable.

What I do...

My approach is relational. Beyond any model or technique, what matters most is how we connect and work together in the room.

I draw from evidence-based approaches including humanistic and person-centred therapy, narrative therapy, REBT, DBT, and strengths-based work. I also integrate trauma-informed practices such as mindfulness, trauma-sensitive yoga, and creative exploration.

I work with both individuals and couples. With individuals, the focus is on building stability, insight, and practical ways forward. With couples, I help partners slow things down, understand patterns of conflict, and shift how they respond to each other, so conversations become more workable and less reactive.

My role is to help create the conditions where change can happen: enough steadiness to think clearly, enough space to notice what’s underneath, and enough support to try something different.

I’m grounded, clinically informed, and adaptable, balancing structure with responsiveness. Sessions are shaped around what’s most relevant to you, blending structure with flexibility in the moment.

I also work with frontline professionals in corrections, healthcare, military, and community services. If you’re used to operating under pressure, carrying trauma, or pushing through burnout, this work focuses on slowing down safely, rebuilding boundaries, and reconnecting with parts of yourself that exist outside the role.

qualifications &

I hold a Bachelor of Counselling from the Australian College of Applied Psychology and am a member of the Canadian Professional Counsellors Association. I have also been involved with the Association of Counselling Therapy of Alberta since its inception in 2020. My practice is insured and recognized by major extended health providers (see FAQ).

Alongside my clinical work, I design and facilitate group programs and workshops that integrate therapeutic practice with experiential learning. This includes Improv 100 at Grindstone Theatre, a mental health–focused class that uses improvisation to build connection, flexibility, and emotional awareness.

Across individual, couples, and group work, I integrate clinical practice with creative, experiential approaches so change can be explored and experienced, not just discussed.

I'm a strong supporter of the arts community and believe therapy should remain accessible. I work with clients to ensure continuity of care, which sometimes means finding flexible options when finances are a barrier. If you’re planning to use insurance, please let me know who your provider is when you get in touch. While most major plans recognize Counselling Therapy, not all do — and coverage can vary between plans under the same provider. It’s important to confirm with your insurer whether your plan includes counselling therapy before we begin.

I design and facilitate custom workshops for organizations, community groups, and creative spaces, with a focus on staff wellness, trauma-informed practice, and creative development.

A core offering is improv-based therapy—an experiential approach that integrates Improv principles, play, embodiment, and clinical insight. Using structured improv exercises, mindfulness, and group storytelling, participants build communication skills, emotional regulation, and flexibility in real time.

Workshops are suitable for teams, artists, and helping professionals, and can be adapted to fit specific goals, group dynamics, and settings.

I also collaborate with Grindstone Theatre to provide dedicated space for workshops and group programs when needed.

If you’re looking to develop a one-time workshop or an ongoing series, I can work with you to design something that fits your context.

As a Counselling Therapist, I don’t provide formal psychological assessments or diagnoses. However, I keep a strong working knowledge of the DSM-5 and evidence-based treatment guidelines, and can help you make sense of the language and processes involved. My role is often to translate the clinical into the understandable — helping you find clarity, next steps, and the right supports. I also can collaborate with other clinicians and healthcare providers to ensure referrals, continuity of care, and well-coordinated treatment.
